Time management is so important. Every moment counts. As a mom I feel this truth on a daily basis. As you know by now I like to plan my days out and honestly prior to having kids was pretty good at it. Having one child made that a little more difficult but I could still keep it together most days. Add a second and third child….wow! That’s all I can say. Some days it definitely feels as if they are running the show and I am just running behind them.
In order for those days to be few and far between, I know that I have to stay ahead of the schedule. You never know when someone is going to have a meltdown over their outfit choice (happened today), spill an entire bag of chips right before you go out the door (happened yesterday) or forget something as you are pulling out of the driveway (happens every day).
Can anyone relate? To maintain my sanity I have specific times for certain activities. For example, I do laundry 3 days a week and only on those days. If I don’t miss a day then I can keep my laundry in check most of the time. The other 4 days a week, don’t even think about asking me to wash your favorite shirt. Not going to happen. I always run the dishwasher at night so that while the kids are eating breakfast in the morning I can unload it and start the process over again.
Maybe someday soon I’ll share some of my time management tips with you but today is about making the most of those times we consider a waste. Like waiting in the school pickup line, sitting at dance practice or a ball field, counting the minutes in a waiting room or peacefully waiting for your hair to process at the salon. This time doesn’t have to be wasted. There are plenty of tasks that can be accomplished during these times. Now, what tasks I choose to complete depends on how long I will be waiting and if I have my kids with me. There’s absolutely zero chance I’m getting homework finished in a doctors waiting room with my kids. But waiting at an appointment solo, I could at least work on a reading assignment. Here are several ways you can maximize your time management.
Dinner Menu & Grocery List
One major time saver for me is to plan out my menu and grocery shop only one time during the week. I spend less time contemplating what’s for dinner in the evenings and less time in the store. This is so easy to do in the car or a waiting room and Pinterest makes it easy to find new recipes. This is the perfect time to mark this task off your to do list.
Make phone calls, set appointments, etc.
Of this nature are a necessary evil. On many occasions it takes more time than we have allotted. While waiting in the car with my younger two kids, I make all necessary phone calls. I give them an activity to keep them busy so it will at least be semi-quiet.
Cleaning out the car
That “activity” I just mentioned usually involves cleaning out the car. They love wiping down the car with Armor all/anti-bacterial wipes and with a little coaxing they will scour the car for trash. I have a “trash” bag and a “take in the house” bag making it easy to sort when we are home. The car hasn’t been detailed after this but it is plenty clean enough.
If you know you will be at the ball field for practice then pack some tennis shoes and walk the track or steps at the school. I’m sure another mom would love to join you. This means that instead of waking up early to get your exercise in for the day, you could sleep a little longer. Or maybe you can wake up earlier to put dinner in the crockpot, do homework or fold a little laundry to get ahead.
I always have a notebook with me in case I find myself with a little extra time. It is the perfect time to catch up on school work, brainstorming for the blog or planning out the next week to do list. Squeezing as much out of every minute I can means I have more free time in the evenings or on the weekend. It may seem unnecessary to make sure I eliminate wasted time but it is totally worth it to me. In my mind it is part of being intentional and taking charge of my day.
What do you do to make the most of your day? Do you have any time saving tips or tricks? And remember sharing is caring so if you enjoyed this post please pin it or share it with a friend on social media. I’d really appreciate it. 🙂
