You’ve made it to the weekend! I’ve heard from several of you about how busy life has been lately. School, work, holiday planning, chasing kids and keeping up a house has some of you pretty overwhelmed. I hope this weekend you can find some much needed rest and maybe even squeeze in a date night?
A lot of times our date nights are the first thing to get pushed to the bottom of the list. I get it. It happens to me too, way too often honestly. Date night doesn’t have to be complicated though. It can be as simple as ordering pizza. Spending time together and making an effort is the important thing but it is fun to mix it up every now and then too.
Several weeks ago I shared the importance of dating after marriage. I gave you an idea about filling out date cards and I wanted to follow up with you. How’s it going? Are you having trouble coming up with ideas? If so, then I’m about to help you out.
When Trae and I were first married we moved to Birmingham, Alabama. It was a new place and we didn’t know anyone. We were together pretty much all the time. Of course we had work and school but other than that we didn’t have any distractions. Date night was pretty much every night. 11 years and 3 kids later, things look a little different. Squeezing in a date night between school schedules, work schedule, extra-curricular activities and a babysitter is not that easy.
We have some favorite date night ideas when we do find that allusive free time and I want to share that with you today.
Do Something Active
We love to play tennis together. Being active can be such a stress reliever and it adds a little fun to date night as well. Hiking is also a great date idea. It’s so refreshing to get outside and disconnect from all the stresses of life. And no one better to do that with than your spouse. I’m sure you both need it.
A Night At Home
My husband works a lot so having a night in to relax with nowhere to be is a treat for him. Schedule for the kids to go to Grandmas’ and just enjoy being home. We love to grill out and make those yummy mushrooms I told you about yesterday but if you don’t want to cook just order a pizza. Watch a movie, play a board game or make some cookies. It’s actually one of our favorite date nights these days.
Take A Road Trip
Growing up my parents loved to take road trips. Just get in the car and see where you end up. Enjoy the company, conversation and decide on the destination as you go. My husband loves to drive through the mountains this time of year to see all the fall colors. I love taking a drive in December to look for Christmas lights.
Find The Kid In You
Adulthood can be so over rated sometimes. So many stresses and reasons to be serious can cause us to leave our fun side behind. Plan a trip to the aquarium, zoo or amusement park just the two of you. I bet you will be surprised at how much fun you have. I love roller coasters! Laughing at Trae might be my favorite part.
Accomplish A Goal/Learn Something New
After my son was born I was eager to lose the baby weight. I decided that I wanted to run a ½ marathon at least once in my life and set a goal. We decided to run it together and it was such a fun event to experience together. We didn’t always run together but sometimes we did. We encouraged each other, whined about the pain together and celebrated when we finally crossed the finish line. I’m not sure we will ever do it again but it was fun to accomplish that together. Maybe running is not your thing but find something you can do together and work towards. Rock climbing, pottery class, hiking a particular mountain, painting class, cooking class just to name a few. The choices are endless.
