Last week I shared with you our family Fall Bucket List and one of the items was to make a leaf craft. This past week has been full of kids’ crafts at the Winkler household so today I thought I would share them with you. I’m also going to link you to a few of my favorite fall craft ideas from other bloggers. They have some awesome ideas and I plan on doing those crafts with my kiddos as well.
There are several reasons I do crafts with my kids. And I’m going to be honest with you sometimes it is just to keep them busy so I can do laundry, unload the dishwasher or write a blog post. 😉 No matter what though I always want it to be something fun.
- To learn something
- To keep them busy
- To encourage their creativity
Unless I am trying to teach a particular lesson that requires me to facilitate (a science experiment), I do not want to participate in the craft. Let me explain. I never tell my kids to color in the lines or that they must color the sky blue. I am not one of those moms that needs the pumpkin craft to be round, orange and have symmetrical eyes. If they want to make a square, purple pumpkin with 3 eyes and no mouth that is perfectly fine with me. It is their craft and I want them to make it their way.
In my mind there are plenty of things they have to do my way like brushing their teeth or sitting appropriately at the dinner table so in areas where they can have more freedom I want to be sure to allow it. I know this seems silly to make crafting with your kids something meaningful but I truly believe it can be. The little things we do with our kids can make a big difference over time. Allowing them freedom even in the smallest of ways encourages their independence and confidence.
So when I post craft ideas you will see what most likely see what THEY do. Sometimes I will also do the craft so you can see what the intention was but honestly that won’t happen very often. J Here is what we have been up to this week. Some of these crafts my amazing mother in law did with the kids while Trae and I had a much needed date night.
The best part of this craft for my three was collecting the acorns. My kids spent over an hour collecting acorns. It’s the simple things. After we collected the acorns we decided to paint them and make little acorn people.
They spent another 2 hours in the back yard painting, gluing and glittering. Is that amazing or what? This craft took about 3 hours from start to finish. In that 3 hours I cleaned, completed school work and exercised. Ha ha ha!! Yeah right! I sat on the back porch in perfect weather and enjoyed the giggles. Sometimes that is more important or at least that is what I tell myself.
This craft is super easy and won’t cost very much at all. You can tailor it to what you have in your house already. Simply cut the center out of a paper plate and decorate. We used googly eyes, construction paper that the kids cut and Halloween stickers. They didn’t want to color it but that was the initial idea. Add glitter, hanging spiders or anything they want to make it extra spooky.
This is another craft that gets the kids outside. First create a book by using construction paper as the cover and printer paper in the middle. Simply stack and staple. They can decorate the outside of the book however they want depending on what kind of mess you want that day.
Once their book is made, they can begin to collect leaves. We have plenty of trees in our yard so it was easy for us to do this at home but you could go to a park or go on a hike if you need to. My kids love to do things on their own so they loved the idea that all mom had to do was staple the papers.
To make this educational, write what tree each leaf belongs to and a fact about that tree. You can also use this book to make leaf rubbings which I think is a staple craft in the fall season.
This is technically not a craft but a perfect activity for kids to help with. As you can see in the pictures they are not shy about getting dirty.
All of these crafts are pretty self-explanatory and easy enough that the kids can do completely on their own. There are tons of bloggers out there with some pretty awesome craft ideas. Check out a few that I will be doing this season.
All of these blogs are amazing and have so many great ideas. You will be happy you checked them out!
Thanks for stopping by again today and I hope you guys have a great week!
