Happy Sunday! I hope you guys have had a great weekend. Sunday is always a preparation day for me. Grocery store, laundry, cleaning the house and an early bedtime usually make up my to do list. If I can finish my Sunday with these goals accomplished I feel prepared to have a productive week. If not, I feel as if I am constantly chasing the week a few steps behind.
So today, that is what I want to talk to you about. Preparation. Not just for the mundane tasks of the week but for life in general. Your dreams. Your goals.
A couple of years ago I had a dream of starting a blog. For many reasons that are the same today. I want to challenge myself with something new leaving my fears, insecurities and comfort zone behind me. I do not consider myself creative or a natural born writer but I am a fast learner and a very hard worker which I’m counting on to overcome my areas of weakness. Eventually, I would like to earn a full time income through blogging. Here is where I am being vulnerable with you. My first goal is hard for anyone to really judge whether or not I accomplish it. My second reason for starting this blog can easily be measured. So I am putting my potential for failure out there for you to see. And I’m doing it on purpose. Why? Well that brings me to another reason for starting this blog.
I have a vision for what Messes & Memories can be. Many successful bloggers will tell you that before you start a blog you need to ask yourself a few questions. What are you passionate about? What do you have to offer to your readers? What do you spend your time day dreaming about? So I did. And for me it was not easy. I’m not one to assume that I have something to offer.
Most of the time I prefer to be in the background. I know what you are thinking. Why in the world would you start a blog for everyone to see? Because I also love being around people, hearing their stories, problems and simply being a part of a community much larger than myself. One of my passions is having people to my home for a large get together and creating an environment for people to feel relaxed, maybe meet new friends and forget about the current stresses they are facing. I enjoy assisting people in solving their problems and watching them succeed. This is also one of the things I love about parenting. I am the facilitator to 3 kids growing into responsible, kind, giving adults. How cool is that?
So consider Messes & Memories my home. I am inviting you to join me on this journey called life. Right now parenting three young kids with my husband is a huge part of my life so you will see a lot of posts on parenting, home management, favorite recipes and marriage. I am also trying to set and achieve personal goals. I want to share those with you in hopes that you will feel compelled to set your own goals and be successful. This week I will be sharing my goals more specifically and the first steps I am taking to be successful. This is the answer to the above question. I will be sharing my goals, dreams, successes and failures because that is how to create community, to support each other, facilitate growth and these things I have found are my passion.
I will begin posting on a regular basis about setting goals and living intentionally. For today, here are the first 5 steps to reaching your goal.
Five Steps to Reaching Your Goal:
Write it down.
Find a cute notebook (the cute notebook is not a requirement) and write down your goals. Be specific. You will probably have more than one goal so try to limit yourself at 3 major goals. Maybe it is to start a blog, start a new career, to lose weight or to become debt free. Whatever it is do not shy away from it because it seems unreachable or scary. Dream big!
How will you achieve it?
You don’t need an exact plan right now but you do need to know you are being realistic. So, what are some steps to achieving this goal? Hiring a personal trainer, going to school for a certification, setting up a budget, etc. If you cannot answer this question it does not mean you should give up on your goal but that you need to do some research. You may have to adjust things a little and that’s okay.
What is your time frame?
Set yourself up for success here. We sometimes give ourselves too much time because we are afraid to get started or we aren’t really believing it is possible. The opposite can be equally as damaging. Starting a blog, gaining a huge following and making a full time income in one month is not realistic and you will set yourself up to be discouraged and frustrated. Take time to know the process involved in reaching your goal. This will enable you to set a realistic time frame.
Break it down into mini goals.
So many times our goals can seem daunting, we become overwhelmed and give up. To keep this from happening set mini goals on your way to achieve the big dream in the end. If you want to lose 30 lbs then your mini goals may be to eliminate soda from your diet, workout 3 times a week for 2 months, lose 5 lbs, etc. Each time you meet a mini goal you will feel encouraged and have the confidence you need to keep going.
This is such a powerful step so don’t leave it out. Accountability provides motivation, support, encouragement and knowledge. When you tell someone, you immediately feel the need to take action. That is a good thing and often that extra push we need. It is good to hear from my family, “How’s the blog coming along?” It is a gentle reminder that I set a goal and to keep pushing. I would also consider telling someone that is doing the same thing or has already been there. This gives you an extra resource for information as well.
That doesn’t seem too hard, does it? So find some time this week and brainstorm your ideas. Getting started is the first step. Don’t get overwhelmed with the end result right. Just show up and get started. You got this!
I hope you have found this post encouraging today and I would love to hear from you about your goals, plans and dreams. All of our goals will look different but some of the strategy and planning to achieve them will be the same. Part of my vision that I mentioned earlier is for Messes and Memories to become a community of support. A place where we ask questions, get advice and most of all find encouragement to be the best versions of ourselves.
Coming up this week is a recipe post, my goals worksheet, a fun post about my favorite fall items and a kid friendly craft so be sure to check back! Thank you for supporting Messes & Memories.
